Ralph Gibson

Ralph Gibson is a Photographer from California whose work shows a lot of character. As I researched into Gibsons collections I can compare it to his history in the U.S Navy as well as his up bringing in the Hollywood film industry and being able to see that reflected in his series in the 70s.

Gibson growing up in the film industry gave him skills that reflected in his work as a photographer. In a BBC news article they mentioned skills he learned in Hollywood such as, " close-ups and the intense light required". These are skills that he grew up learning how they worked and had an eye for. He works the harsh lighting very well as his pictures involve a lot of contrast and different shade that adds many different components to his pictures.

Gibsons is very brave with what he chooses to photograph. There's a very surreal feeling when going through his images. Specially his Deja vu series that features images of soldiers and carries a sort of eerie feeling within it. It has a lot of moody images that I imagine captures the feelings and things he experienced during his time in the military.

His images are very visually interesting, and the series have at least one explicit photo each they work with the series. The bikini picture in the Days at sea are very well posed and make sense compositionally as high contrast pictures. This is what I mean by his photography is brave as it involves images that can make some uncomfortable, but others might really enjoy them.
