Sebastião Salgado

Sebastiao has a very complex series of images. He has an eye for texture as his images are very detailed and include an abundance of textures and patterns. I especially like his environmental portraits in the Amazon as a Brazilian photographer familiar with the history of the area.

The Amazon is a beautiful place with so much to capture. I really like his Images in the River as he spends a lot of time traveling and from city to city. The tribal pictures are very detailed and is something we have not seen before with any other photographer. I think this is a very beautiful culture and he does a great job of capturing things that we don't normally see.

As an American I can attest that we're all biased on the components of the Amazon and have a premade image of what it looks like through the American lens. As a local Sebastiao has the benefit of knowing how to connect not only with different groups of people in the land but shows what we normally would not see.

Looking more on this series and his experience navigating his time here with an anthropologist is very interesting to me. I really like the anthropology field and this combination with Sebastiao is important to truly capture and build a relationship with their subject. One thing we learned from our portrait assignment is the importance of building relationships with the people you're working with. This is mainly important when working with natives specially in the Amazon as they're not fond of outsiders as they don't know what their intentions are.
